The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and the University of Mississippi (UM) established an IGERT program in 2003 with collaboration between their Polymer Science (USM) and Medicinal Chemistry (UM) departments. Our IGERT program takes a unique approach of including the Department of Economics and Workforce Training (USM) to provide an entrepreneurial component which will give us, as PhD scientists, the skills necessary for starting a small business or participating in the business aspects of a larger company. We used our newly found skills to compete in and place in both local and national business plan competitions while continuing our business education and collaborative research efforts.
