Transition metal carbides can be problematic when the amount of free, or unreacted carbon, is to be quantified. Separation of carbon bearing species during analysis can present potential safety hazards, as well as obstacles to obtaining precise results. Once isolated, free carbon is determined using LECO CS 600 instrumentation. This presentation will discuss Cerac's approach to the analysis of free carbon in zirconium carbide.
