| Above my desk is a photo of Ted Williams, and I can still, almost, hear his higher pitched voice, his wonderful and unique laugh, and - more importantly- can still FEEL with intensity the thumbtack in my chair....the sense that I can do more, and I can do it better, and there are still unmet needs in society that beg the energy of all who can provide it. That is the chemistry that he inculcated into his students, along with the molecules, and the instrumentation, and the demand for honesty in observation and data reporting. Ted Williams had so many diverse tools that he exploited to drive his points home, whether they be about chemistry or about life, and of course, life is all about chemistry. This is a story about mentoring at the highest level. |
