| Abstract Ionic liquids (ILs) are making a profound impact on many areas of scientific research and technology. Over the last decade, organic chemists have been using them as unique solvent systems for carrying out organic reactions. More recently ILs have been found to be very useful in areas of chemical analysis. Perhaps their biggest impact has been in separation science. Their properties and development as stationary phases and extraction media will be outlined and discussed. Their unusual selectivity and high stability are two of their many advantages.
