Ted Williams was a colleague who in many ways taught me how to teach. Naturally, I could not emulate his style — who could? — but I was able to develop my own style by "borrowing" some of the things Ted did as a teacher. I will give examples of how Ted taught and what it was like to be his colleague on a daily basis. Although I have an insider's view, other colleagues at Wooster and elsewhere had significant interactions with Ted. I will therefore rely on some of these colleagues, as well as former students, to tell me what they saw in Ted that made him such an effective teacher. There is no doubt that part of Ted's effectiveness originated from his unfailing good nature, something that he encouraged in others by saying, "Be of good cheer!" |
