| The Great Lakes Intercontinental Instrumentation Collaboratory was established in 2004 as a means to share both expertise and instrumentation between an initial group of four universities each sharing an interest in Great Lakes. Expertise in tropical pesticide persistence residing at the University of Dar-Es-Salaam (Dr. Michael Kishimba), Egerton University in Kenya (Dr. Ward Mavura), and Kenya Methodist University (Ms. Alice Muriithi)is shared with Loyola University Chicago (Dr. Alanah Fitch). Instrumentation at Loyola University and at Kenya Methodist is shared within the group via remote control software. In the initial year interconnectivity was established and a shared set of curriculum modules developed centered around pesticide chemistry. In this immediate past year an interactive web page was developed with the assistance of IT graduate students and the first sets of samples analyzed remotely. Technical details for operating a collaboratory will be briefly discussed. In addition, preliminary results on pesticide concentrations in Rift Valley water samples analyzed on a remote GC-MS at Loyola University Chicago as operated by East Africa students and faculty are presented. |
