Synthesis and characterization of a highly fluorescent diarylethene

Recent great interests in photochromic diarylethenes, which reversibly change their optical properties upon photo-excitation, have been motivated by their potential applications in an erasable memory and optical switch. In the present study, we will report the synthesis and the photochromic properties of 1,2-bis(2-methyl-1-benzothiophene-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene (BTF6) and its sulfonyl derivative, 1,2-bis(2-methyl-1-benzothiophene-1,1-dioxide-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene (BTFO4) to develop efficient nondestructive fluorescence based photochromic readout systems. We found that the fluorescence quantum yield of BTFO4 was increased upon photo-cyclization in contrast to the case of BTF6. The oxidation of sulfide in benzothiophene-ring of BTF6 transforms the closed form isomer from a very weak emitter to a highly fluorescent chromophore.
