Novel N1-C4 B-lactam bond breakage: Synthesis of 1, 2, 3-vicinyl tricarbonyl systems and their derivatives

B-lactams and their derivatives have long been recognized as important synthetic building blocks. The novel sequential cleavage of two bonds in a B-lactam ring, the N1-C4 bond and an accompanying C3-C4 hydride shift, to form 3-acetoxy-4,4-bis(methylthio)azetidin-2-ones a well as explorations of the synthetic properties of these resultant systems will be reported.
