Synthesis of unsymmetrical pyrazines

No one has yet developed a strategy for the assembly of unsymmetrical pyrazines. We have demonstrated that lanthanide-catalyzed epoxide opening affords the amino diol 3, which on oxidation followed by heating with hydroxylamine yields 4. This approach can be used to construct a variety of unsymmetrical pyrazines.
