Flavonoid 1, isoflavonoid 2, and aurone 3 are present in a variety of botanical dietary supplements. Flavonoids and isoflavonoids are the most abundant polycyclic phenols in our diet. These classes of compounds have been reported to exhibit a wide spectrum of useful biological activities and are believed to produce beneficial effects on various aspects of human health. The synthesis of these compounds can be achieved from 1, 3-benzodioxin-4-ones 4 and 5. The 1, 3-benzodioxin-4-ones are prepared from commercial 2, 4, 6-trihydroxybenzoic acid (6).
