| Objective: study the effects of grapefruit and grapefruit products on weight and metabolic parameters 100 obese patients were randomized to either placebo capsules and apple juice, grapefruit extract capsules and apple juice, grapefruit juice and placebo capsules, or fresh grapefruit and placebo capsule three times a day before meals. Patients were instructed to maintain their usual diet. Weight and metabolic parameters were followed over 12 weeks. Results: At the end of 12 weeks the placebo group lost 0.2 kilos, the grapefruit extract group lost 1.1 kilos, the grapefruit juice group lost 1.5 kilos, and the fresh grapefruit group lost 1.6 kilos. The fresh grapefruit group had statitically more weight lose compared to placebo. A secondary analysis of patients with metabolic syndrome showed statitically signficant improvement in both grapefruit juice and fresh grapefruit groups. It appears that eating grapefruit is associated with weight loss and that patients with metaboic syndrome respond to both grapefruit juice and grapefruit. |
