Methods have been developed and implemented for studies of surface dynamics at solid-liquid interfaces by linear and non-linear optical techniques involving the coupling of electrodes of characteristic dimensions on the order of microns and ultrafast charge injection schemes. Illustrations will be provided of the use of both reflectance spectroscopy and second harmonic generation for monitoring the kinetics of fast electron transfer, as well as phase transitions involving adsorbed species on electrode surfaces. Also to be discussed are dual spectroscopy strategies aimed at monitoring simultaneously well-defined areas of a single microelectrode using two different optical probes.
