| The content of principal (Al, Ca, K, Fe, Mg, Mn) and trace elements (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, Tl, Zn) in old sulphidic mine waste was determined with the emphasis on their element release to soil/groundwater. Eleven different geological settings in central Sweden were sampled, digested with concentrated nitric acid in a microwave oven and analysed with ICP-MS. Water adjacent to the deposits was collected with bailers from groundwater wells. The results show a highly variable trace metal content in the solid phases, although with rather distinct correlations between individual elements within each setting. In the aqueous phase the presence of trace metals is related to the composition of the solid waste as well as the chemical behavior of the elements. Three major groups are distinguished; (Ca, K, Mg, Cd, Tl and Zn); (Al, Fe, Pb); (As, Sb). |
