The incorporation mechanism of nickel and zinc in lithiophorite and birnessite was studied at varying doping concentrations on synthetic samples to avoid the inherent complexity of natural samples. Structural characterization was performed using X-ray diffraction and EXAFS spectroscopy. The high quality of EXAFS spectra (up to 16 Å-1) allowed us to resolve interatomic distances down to 0.12 Å and to model and interpret quantitatively the contribution from multiple scattering effects. The likely crystallographic sites occupied by Zn and Ni will be discussed on the basis of these results.
