A new process synthesis method is essential to give answers to solve the environmental problems of an earth scale. Characteristic features of a chemical process, especially key factors to improve its efficiency, can be extracted easily by graphical display of energy and exergy information. In this study, the improvement of methanol synthesis system including reforming, compression of gases, methanol synthesis, heat exchange, and purification processes was discussed by use of energy-utilization diagrams, EUD. Fig.1 shows the EUD diagram for the conventional methanol reactor with side quench streams, while Fig.2 shows the one for multiple-tubing reactor with four steps removal of produced methanol. The system efficiency was improved largely by use of multiple-tubing reactor. The EUD diagrams for various parts of these two systems were compared and the further improvement of system efficiency was discussed.
