Over the last four decades great progress has been made in the understanding of the properties, the excited states, and the electronic structures of metal complexes. An abiding interest of the author has been relating this information obtained from physical investigations to the detailed pathways of chemical reactions. Employing results derived from the numerous studies of (nd)6 metal complexes, the author will attempt to define the bridge connecting the disparate investigations of the spectroscopist, the photochemist, and the synthesis expert.
