The bonding of a CO molecule to various single metal adatoms (Cr, Mn, Fe, Pd, Ag, and Au) on a NiAl(110) surface have been studied using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy with the STM (STM-IETS) enables characterization of the metal-CO bonding at the single molecule level. Spatial resolution of the STM provides information on the bonding geometry as well as the local environment of the single bond under investigation. The C-O vibrational properties have been compared for different metal carbonyl species and the effect of the CO bonding on the local electronic structure has been studied.
