By using a large surface area attenuated total internal reflection element (ATR) and time resolved measurements infrared spectroscopy can be used to differentiate solvent and solute molecules interacting with a surface from those in the bulk solution. Observations of water being displaced by polar organic solvents such as THF or leaving a non-polar solvent to adhere to a polar surface will be discussed. Preliminary results on competition for surface sites in mixed solvent systems will also be discussed.
