| Past studies have demonstrated that mixtures of anionic and cationic surfactants can form vesicles in solution. This presentation addresses the influence of light on aqueous mixtures of 4,4'-bis(trimethylammoniumhexyloxy) azobenzene bromide (BTHA) and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) by using quasi-elastic light scattering, small angle neutron scattering and electron microscopy. The stability of vesicles at equilibrium will be discussed in view of measurements of the microstructure of these solutions following sequential illumination with ultra-violet light and visible light (a photo-cycle). In addition, we will report on the dynamics of reorganization of these mixed surfactant systems following photoisomerization of the cationic surfactant into cis-rich and trans-rich photostationary states. The effect of the bolaform structure of the cationic surfactant on the phase diagram will also be discussed. |
