| Anatase TiO2 is known to photo oxidize airborne pollutants with greater than 80% efficiency, but the photo oxidation efficiency drops to about 5% when in contact with aqueous solution. The first step for oxidation of gas-phase species is adsorption onto the surface. We have investigated the effect of water dosage on the adsorption of methanol with focus on competition between water and methanol. The surface specific spectroscopy sum frequency generation is used to detect water, physisorbed molecular methanol and chemisorbed methoxy. Results show that while methanol efficiently displaces water on the TiO2 surface, water is rather inefficient at displacing methanol. Water does appear to affect the orientation of methanol on the surface, an orientation that recovers on removal of the water.
