| We have built a combined RAIRS/STM system and demonstrated its use in the study of select systems on the Ag(110) and Ag(111) surfaces. On Ag(110) IR-spectra taken following reaction between surface acetylide (-C=C-) and acetic acid (CH3COOH) at 300 K exhibit an intense peak at 1406 cm-1, attributed to the acetate OCO symmetric stretch (1408 cm-1). This result confirms previous XPS and TPRS measurements of the titration of acetylide/Ag(110) by CH3COOH. Reaction between NO2(g) and Ag(111)-p(4x4)-O at room temperature gives a p(3x3) structure on top of the oxygen overlayer. The surface intermediate exhibits vibrational peaks at 791, 1007, 1329 and 1497 cm-1, consistent with the presence of NO3(a) on the Ag(110) surface with C2v symmetry. STM reveals that silver adatoms are incorporated into the nitrate structure. Reaction between toluene and Ag(110)-p(2x1)-O at 300 K generates a surface overlayer consisting of domains of a c(4x2) structure in a complex patterned array. |
