The future of materials and catalysis research within the chemical industry requires the synthesis and testing of many more materials than was typically practiced in the recent past. In addition, the pharmaceutical industry has been using huge libraries of chemical compounds to screen for potential drug candidates. Here, genomics and proteomics research create huge databases filled with key data to solve key questions about the effectiveness of drugs. Customer Relationship Management activities are also creating huge datasets about everything-you-want-to-know about your customer. Many individuals and companies have already reached the stage where they are literally "drowning in data". This presentation will give an overview of the challenges and methods used for mining these large volumes of data for knowledge generation in chemistry and chemical engineering applications.
