Palladium-based catalysts supported on alpha-Al2O3 for the hydrogenation of acetylene were prepared by glow discharge plasma. Through the hydrogenation of acetylene used different series of catalysts, we tested the catalytic effect by seeing about the way of its preparation, content of activity component, catalyst promoter and reaction temperature. It was found that the process of preparing catalysts by plasma was simple, quick, audiovisual and easy to control, and the activity and selectivity of the catalyst prepared by plasma were higher than those of conventional catalysts. The acetylene conversion at 100% and selectivity of 71.3% for C2H4 were obtained at 50 °æ over the catalyst prepared by plasma; and the catalyst was stable during the test for more than 20 h. With the temperature rise, the activity of catalyst will increase and the selectivity of catalyst will be reduced. The added cerium and PVP catalyst promoter can enhance its performance.
