| We have recently found that by using a facile chemical oxidative method for surface modification of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), the SWNTs become water-soluble while the band structure of the SWNTs in aqueous solution retains. More significantly, the optical transition of semiconducting SWNTs reversibly responds to pH. To understand the mechanism, we further explore various factors that may lead to a better control for the surface modification of the SWNTs. First, we have studied both pH dependence and ionic strength dependence of thin films of the SWNTs and found similar results to those in solution cases. Secondly, by coating different materials such as sodium dodecyl sulfate, Triton X-100 and PVP onto pristine and acid-treated Tube@Rice and HiPco samples in aqueous solution, we have studied the optical properties of the aqueous suspensions of these samples at different pH. We will present how the different coatings affect the pH dependence of the optical properties of the nanotubes. |
