Ongoing use of petroleum for transportation, chemical feedstocks and energy is not sustainable. It is imperative that new processes for existing processes and new products are developed based on renewable sources. The US is well suited to be a major player in this area due to a large supply of biomass and DuPont has committed to base 25% of its needs on renewable resources by 2010. This talk will discuss some research efforts identified at developing new processes based on sustainable feedstocks. Examples will include the production of tetrahydrofuran and isosorbide from glucose, and nylon intermediates and solvents from cellulose.
