| The US EPA has recently rationalized the rules regarding the storage, treatment, transportation and disposal of mixed waste materials (66 FR 27218). The new rules allow generators to treat mixed wastes in tanks, without RCRA permit, if, along with other standard conditions, the treatment process is non-thermal, e.g., incineration. The rule shelters the treated mixed waste from the "derived-from" rule and allows for disposal as low level radioactive waste upon removal of the RCRA component. The CerOx Process is a non-thermal process for destruction of organic waste materials. The process is conducted in tanks and is exempt from RCRA regulation. The process equipment has been designed to perform the destruction of the organic component of laboratory mixed wastes with recovery of the tritium component as tritiated water. A CerOx System 2 has been delivered to a customer for the processing of laboratory mixed wastes. The process equipment and waste streams will be described, including recovery of the radioactive component. |
